As Laozi approached the Hangu Pass, its keeper saw a vast purple mist rising in the east and knew a sage was coming - and indeed, Laozi arrived on his black ox. From then, 'purple mist from the east' became the finest four characters for a doorway: the light comes out of the east, and good things are on the road.
